  • The Story of the Ginseng Girl and Shan Wa

Long, long ago, there was a little boy whose parents had both died. He had a distant uncle named Ai Bao, who went to Northeast China to hunt for ginseng. When Ai Bao returned and saw that the child was handsome, he thought to himself: “If I take him to dig for ginseng, maybe he can become my good helper.” Thus, Ai Bao gave the child the name “Shan Wa” and took him into the Wanda Mountains of Northeast China.

Ai Bao and Shan Wa passed through Yingmen Dingzi and Guanmen Lazi, crossing untold high mountains and great ridges, and leaping over many large rivers and small creeks, yet they didn’t find a single ginseng root. Ai Bao began to treat Shan Wa poorly, calling him a jinx and a bringer of bad luck who brought misfortune to the mountain hunters, and he wanted to get rid of him. Little Shan Wa was only twelve years old, but he was sensible. He knew that in these old forests, if he couldn’t keep up with the main group, he wouldn’t survive; so even though he was exhausted and his feet were blistered, he scrambled to keep up. When others rested, Shan Wa still had to gather firewood and pick vegetables to cook for everyone.

One day, they came to a small hill. The North Mountain connected to it was tall and vast; the trees on the mountain were as green as jade, and the rocks were crystal clear and shining like pieces of white jade. The small river below the mountain was rippling, and it was truly beautiful. Standing on the hillside, Ai Bao looked again and again, frowning as he said: “With such mountains, waters, and greenery, it would be strange if there were no ginseng!” That night, they stayed there.

By the next morning, suddenly there were birds singing on the mountain. Hearing the first cry, Ai Bao jumped up, threw on his clothes, and chased after the sound. After circling around, he returned and told everyone: “It’s a Bangchui bird (ginseng bird). Let’s set up camp!” Everyone was very happy and built a shack there. Ai Bao made Shan Wa stay to watch the camp while he led the others up the North Mountain to dig for ginseng. Only little Shan Wa was left in the shack, and becoming bored, he came out to look at the scenery.

Suddenly, he saw a little girl by the small river at the foot of the hill. This little girl was chubby, wearing a red bellyband, with twelve upward-pointing braids on her head. Her face was white with a rosy tint, like a large rugosa rose. She looked about eleven or twelve years old and was scooping up water to drink by the river. Shan Wa was usually with his uncle, who was as grim as the King of Hell and never gave him a kind look, so his heart was filled with indescribable pent-up frustration. Suddenly seeing a companion of his own age, he stood happily on a rock and shouted: “Little girl! Come up quickly, let’s play together!”

The girl suddenly heard someone shouting from the hillside. She looked up and saw a boy standing on the rock; his clothes were tattered and his shoes were full of holes, but he had delicate features, and she liked him at first sight. However, she deliberately turned her head away and said: “I won’t play with you; you have bad intentions.” As she spoke, she continued to scoop water from the river. Hearing this, Shan Wa was displeased and said: “It doesn’t matter if you don’t play with me, but why do you trample on my good intentions?”

The little girl said: “How can I know if you have a good heart?” Shan Wa said: “If we play together, I won’t bully you, I won’t quarrel with you, I won’t lie to you, and I will be of one mind with you in everything. What do you think?” The little girl stood up, wiped her hands on her red bellyband, and asked: “Is it true?” Shan Wa replied: “In all my life, I have never told a lie.” The little girl was so happy that she ran up the hillside in a few bounds, and the two began to play together hand in hand.

The little girl told Shan Wa stories of tigers and bears fighting, and Shan Wa told her about his experiences of suffering. Shan Wa picked flowers for the girl to wear, and she picked fruit for him to eat. The more they talked, the more they bonded; the more they played, the happier they became—they really hit it off. When it got dark, the little girl said: “Your uncle is about to return. You must never tell him about us.” They agreed to meet again the next day, and the little girl left.

Before long, Ai Bao indeed returned. He had only gathered a few “Er Jia Zi” (small ginseng), which were all young seedlings and tender roots, not to his satisfaction. Ai Bao was certain that there were not only clusters of ginseng in this mountain but also a “Treasure” (they called any ginseng weighing over eight taels a Treasure). But although Ai Bao went out early and returned late every day, he still couldn’t find any large specimens. The little girl came to find Shan Wa every day, and they became good friends. Shan Wa’s complexion became white and rosy, and he looked very spirited.

This change was noticed by Ai Bao. One night, Ai Bao led Shan Wa to a deserted place and questioned him about where he had been going these past few days. Just as Shan Wa was about to tell him, he suddenly remembered the little girl’s warning and said in a low voice: “I’ve just been playing by myself around the mountain.” Ai Bao asked fiercely: “What can you play by yourself?” Shan Wa couldn’t answer for a moment, and his face instantly turned red. Seeing Shan Wa’s reaction, Ai Bao said with a grin: “Good boy, I know even if you don’t say it—otherwise, why would I ask? You’d better tell your uncle!”

Shan Wa felt he could no longer hide the matter, so he told Ai Bao everything about meeting the little girl. Hearing this, Ai Bao was so happy that he picked Shan Wa up and said: “You are truly uncle’s good child; you are truly a lucky little treasure.” After saying this, Ai Bao led Shan Wa back, gave him good things to eat, covered him with a thick quilt at night, and filled his ears with kind and sweet words.

The next day, as he was leaving, Ai Bao handed Shan Wa a red string and said: “When you play with the little girl today, tie this red string to the braid right in the center of her head. This will be a great merit. After you go home, you will have plenty to eat and drink, and a life of fortune to enjoy.”

The next day, Shan Wa stood on the hillside with the red string, waiting for the little girl. After a short while, the little girl arrived. Seeing the red string in Shan Wa’s hand, she was shocked and turned to run, shouting as she fled: “You! You refused to admit you had no good intentions—what are you doing with that red string in your hand!” Shan Wa said: “I’m just going to tie your hair with it!”

The little girl said: “I know you listened to a bad person and want to harm me. I will never play with you again! Never again!” Shan Wa was so anxious he scratched his head, not understanding why, and hurried to ask: “How does tying a red string harm you?” The little girl replied: “I heard from the elders that once tied by a red string, you are recognized and cannot escape, and then you lose your life!” Hearing this, Shan Wa quickly tied the red string to a stone and threw it far away; with a splash, it landed in the river. Knowing that Shan Wa was sincere toward her, the little girl pulled him to play together again.

That evening, when Ai Bao questioned him, Shan Wa told the truth again. Ai Bao’s face changed immediately, and he gave Shan Wa a severe beating. He then pulled another red string from his pocket, tied a tight knot, and gave it to Shan Wa, saying: “Tomorrow, secretly loop this red string onto her braid and tie her up so she can’t get away, then give her to me when I return. Do this well, and I guarantee you endless wealth and honor; if you fail to catch her, don’t blame me for disregarding our bond as uncle and nephew!” Saying this, he drew his waist knife and slashed it before Shan Wa, creating a cold gust of wind, and said viciously: “I will cut off both your feet and send you into the deep mountains to feed the wolves.”

The next day, after Ai Bao and the others had left, the little girl came to find Shan Wa again. Shan Wa had climbed a large tree to pick fruit, and leaves fell all over the girl’s head. The little girl said: “Shan Wa, help me brush them off.” Taking the opportunity while tidying her hair, Shan Wa looped the red string onto the braid in the center of her head. By the time the little girl realized it, she had been tied firmly by the red string. Shan Wa gripped the other end of the string tightly, afraid she would run away.

The little girl was filled with resentment and grief, her eyes brimming with tears as she said: “Shan Wa, are you really going to harm me today?” Shan Wa said: “My uncle just wants to meet you; what is there to fear?” The little girl said: “You don’t know my origins. I am the Ginseng Girl of this Gongzhu Ridge. Your uncle wants to take me and sell me for money. Once I fall into his hands, my life will be over.” As she spoke, tears fell one by one like a broken string of pearls. She cursed: “You humans! Your hearts are blacker than wild mountain grapes. I regret being blind and befriending the wrong person. My thousand years of sunlight and rain are all ruined at your hands.”

Shan Wa originally didn’t know these details; hearing this now, he was both surprised and distressed. He hurriedly said: “Since you are the Ginseng Girl, I will set you free right now.” With that, Shan Wa untied the red string, and in a flash, the Ginseng Girl vanished. When Ai Bao returned and learned that Shan Wa had let the girl go again, he whipped Shan Wa with thorny branches until he was half dead, insisting he must find her. Ai Bao waited for a few days, but the girl never came. In a fit of rage, Ai Bao used his waist knife to cut off both of Shan Wa’s feet, handed him a red string, and said: “Catch the girl, and I’ll carry you back to heal your feet; fail to catch her, and you can wait to feed the wild beasts!” With that, he threw him into the deep valley of the North Mountain.

Shan Wa fainted from the pain and only woke up after dark. He forced himself to lift his head and saw a crescent moon casting pale light, with stars twinkling at him across the sky. Everything around was pitch black, and the forest sea was boundless. Above were high mountains and steep ridges; below was a bottomless abyss. The wind howled and wolves cried, making it eerie and terrifying. He held his knees and began to sob. After a long while, Shan Wa thought: “Who is there to pity me!” Helplessly, he wiped his tears, looked around, and murmured to himself: “Ginseng Girl, oh Ginseng Girl, I don’t complain about suffering for you, but I miss you, I miss you so! Can you come and keep me company?”

At that moment, the wind whistled and the trees all over the mountain swayed with a rustling sound. Suddenly, he discovered a ginseng plant not far away in the moonlight. It had twelve leaves, was emerald green and lush, and all the weeds stayed far away from it. “This ginseng is a Treasure.” Shan Wa slowly crawled over and took out the red string, intending to tie it. However, just as he reached it, the ginseng grew taller. Before long, the plant turned into his friend, the Ginseng Girl. She asked him why he had ended up in such a state, and Shan Wa told her everything.

Hearing this, the girl said sadly: “Alas, it is I who harmed you. How about this: you deliver me to them, and they will take you back.” Shan Wa grabbed the girl and said: “How could I give you to them? Even if we die, we must die together!” As they spoke, both began to cry. Suddenly, the girl said: “I have an idea! Tie a slipknot in the red string, but make it look like a dead knot, and tie it to my braid. Tomorrow, hand me over to your uncle and ask him for your feet in return. Then, have him bring you back here. I will escape and come back to reattach them for you.”

Shan Wa did as the girl said and tied the red string with the slipknot to her braid. The next day, Ai Bao came to the spot; seeing the Ginseng Treasure in hand, his heart bloomed with joy. As soon as he pulled the girl, she transformed into a ginseng plant with twelve leaves. Ai Bao wrapped the ginseng in red cloth, held it in both hands, and had people carry Shan Wa back to the shack. Then, Ai Bao tried to value the Ginseng Treasure and asked Shan Wa: “How much is this Treasure worth?” Shan Wa had no idea about prices, so he lowered his head and remained silent. Pressed for an answer, he simply lay down.

Ai Bao immediately chanted in a long drawl: “The nobleman speaks: the value is ‘one lying down’!” Shan Wa rolled over once, and Ai Bao shouted: “Value: two lying downs!” Shan Wa rolled over eight more times in succession, and Ai Bao set the price: “Fixed price: ten lying downs.” At this point, Shan Wa spoke: “I don’t want a single penny. Just give me back my feet and return me to the original place.” Ai Bao agreed and sent Shan Wa back. Everyone thought he was a foolish child.

That night, while everyone was drunk and fast asleep, the Ginseng Girl secretly pulled the slipknot of the red string and ran back. Shan Wa had already fainted from the pain. The girl reattached Shan Wa’s feet to his ankles, then endured the pain to pinch off a segment of her own “toe” (ginseng root) and placed it in Shan Wa’s mouth. Shan Wa found it fragrant and sweet and instantly regained his spirit. He saw that his feet had already healed; he could run and jump immediately, even more nimbly than before. However, the Ginseng Girl had already hidden away to nurse her own wounds.

Ai Bao discovered the Ginseng Girl was gone and realized he had been tricked. He hated Shan Wa so much that his teeth chattered with rage, and he led his men to catch him. Seeing them, Shan Wa took to his heels. Shan Wa ran in front while Ai Bao and his men chased behind. Shan Wa ran exceptionally fast, and they couldn’t catch him no matter how hard they tried. Not until the third day, when Shan Wa was exhausted and about to jump over a mountain stream, did Ai Bao catch up and strike Shan Wa dead with a club.

The Ginseng Girl found Shan Wa’s body, and her tears fell like rain in her grief. She bit through the tip of her tongue, pried open Shan Wa’s jaws, and sent the fluid into his mouth. The Ginseng Girl fainted from pain several times, but finally, she brought Shan Wa back to life. On Shan Wa’s head, twelve upward-pointing braids also grew, and his face was rosy, radiating a spiritual aura. Shan Wa had also turned into a Ginseng Treasure.

Ai Bao had not given up and still frequently searched for Ginseng Treasures in this area. One day, he suddenly saw the Ginseng Girl and Shan Wa walking hand in hand, hopping and skipping along. Ai Bao knew that Shan Wa had also turned into ginseng; he wanted to keep this pair of Treasures for himself, so he sent everyone else away and chased them alone. The Ginseng Girl and Shan Wa noticed Ai Bao following them, and they ran together. High mountains did not block them, and deep streams did not stop them.

The Ginseng Girl and Shan Wa crossed high mountains and deep streams as if walking on level ground, but Ai Bao was so exhausted he could hardly breathe. He chased for a day, two days; a month, two months. He chased and chased, until finally, Ai Bao died of exhaustion in these mountains. The pair of Ginseng Treasures, the little girl and Shan Wa, stayed hand in hand, playing together and living together, never to be separated again.

It is said that the three daughters of the Dragon King of the Golden River went to visit Cang Mountain and Erhai Lake. When they arrived at the foot of Lotus Mountain in Fengyi County, the local area was suffering from a drought. The eldest daughter asked her two younger sisters to return to the Dragon Palace, while she stayed behind to help the people resolve the water shortage. The eldest daughter transformed into an old woman and went into the fields and villages to observe the drought. Seeing that there was no water for planting and even for drinking, she created a spring at the foot of Lotus Mountain, allowing the fields to be irrigated and ensuring a constant water supply. In gratitude for her kindness, the locals built a temple in her honor, and she was worshiped as the “Golden River Holy Mother.”

The second daughter of the Dragon King was as beautiful as a flower. While attending the March Street Fair in Dali, she met a young man from Haidong named Dong Jialong. Impressed by her beauty, he placed a flower on her head. When the second daughter saw that Dong Jialong had made her the subject of ridicule, she and her third sister went to Haidong to punish him. They arrived at Shizishan in Haidong, where a drought was taking place. The second daughter, unwilling to see the people suffer, summoned a downpour, causing a spring to gush from the hillside and ensuring the area would never lack water again. In gratitude for her kindness, the villagers built a temple in her honor and worshiped her as the “Ciyun Purun Golden Luan Holy Mother.”

After the third daughter was honored as the “Master,” she worried that her sisters might feel lonely and sent five Zhongye to accompany her younger sister to live in Qinglong Mountain. After the younger sister arrived at Qinglong Mountain, she helped the local villagers by bringing rain and water, and was also worshiped as a “Master.” Later, the Dragon King of the Godlen River came to visit his three daughters and, enchanted by the beauty of Cang Mountain and the sea, decided to stay on Qinglong Mountain with his third daughter.

During the Han Dynasty, there was a scholar named Liu Xiang. While traveling to the capital to take the imperial examination, he made a detour to visit Mount Hua. On the mountain stood a temple whose deity, Lady Third of Mount Hua, was a beautiful and kind immortal. Since being sent to Mount Hua by the Queen Mother, she had lived a lonely and solitary life. One day, while singing and dancing in the temple to pass the time, she suddenly noticed a scholar entering the temple.

She hurriedly ascended the lotus pedestal and transformed into a statue. Entering the main hall, Liu Xiang immediately saw the statue of Lady Third, beautiful, gentle, and serene. He was deeply captivated and thought how happy he would be if he could marry her. However, it was only a statue without emotion or awareness. Unable to restrain his excitement, Liu Xiang took out brush and ink and wrote passionately on the wall of his admiration for Lady Third.

Lady Third silently watched all this, her heart filled with mixed emotions. The scholar before her was handsome and talented, full of deep affection for her, and she herself was also deeply attracted to him and loved him. But one was a heavenly immortal and the other a mortal—how could they possibly be united in marriage?

Watching Liu Xiang leave reluctantly and sorrowfully, Lady Third pondered repeatedly and finally decided to disregard the heavenly laws and marry Liu Xiang. She transformed into a mortal woman, caught up with him, and revealed her true feelings. From then on, the two became husband and wife, deeply in love.

As Liu Xiang’s examination date approached, Lady Third was already pregnant. When they parted reluctantly, Liu Xiang gave her a piece of ancestral agarwood, saying that if they later had a son, he could be named “Chenxiang.” They escorted each other for ten li, unwilling to part.

Liu Xiang passed the examination in the capital and was appointed as an inspector of Yangzhou Prefecture. Just as he was taking office, Lady Third of Mount Hua met with disaster. At that time, it was the Queen Mother of the West’s birthday, and she held a grand Peach Banquet in the Heavenly Palace, attended by immortals from all directions.

Because Lady Third was pregnant, she claimed illness and stayed behind on Mount Hua. Unexpectedly, her brother Erlang Shen learned the truth and flew into a rage, accusing her of secretly marrying a mortal and violating heavenly law, and sought to capture her and bring her back to Heaven for punishment.

Lady Third was not afraid, especially since she carried with her the Lotus Lantern bestowed by the Queen Mother. This treasure was the sacred object guarding Mount Hua; no matter what demon or immortal it faced, once the Lotus Lantern shone, they would be subdued and captured.

Knowing he could not defeat her, Erlang Shen ordered his hound to steal the treasure while Lady Third was resting. Thus, the pitiful Lady Third was imprisoned by Erlang Shen beneath Mount Hua in the Black Cloud Cave.

In the pitch-dark cave, Lady Third gave birth to her son, Chenxiang. To prevent danger, she secretly begged a yaksha to send the child to Yangzhou and leave him with his father, Liu Xiang.

When Chenxiang grew up and became sensible, he learned that his mother was suffering beneath Mount Hua and became determined to rescue her. He told his father of his plan, but Liu Xiang, being only a frail scholar, could do nothing but sigh and shake his head.

Thus, Chenxiang left home alone to search for his mother. After enduring countless hardships, he finally reached Mount Hua. But where was his mother? The eight-year-old child was at a loss and burst into loud sobs.

The piercing cries echoed through the empty valley and alerted the Thunder Immortal who happened to pass by. The kind immortal asked about the reason and spoke up for the wronged Lady Third, but could do nothing to change her fate.

Thus, he took Chenxiang back to his residence. Under the immortal’s guidance, Chenxiang studied diligently and gradually mastered military strategy, various martial arts, and seventy-three transformations.

On his sixteenth birthday, Chenxiang bade farewell to the immortal and set out to rescue his mother at Mount Hua. The immortal praised his resolve and gave him a divine axe capable of splitting mountains.

Riding on clouds and mist, Chenxiang arrived at Mount Hua and loudly called for his mother. His voice pierced through layers of rock and reached Lady Third’s ears. Overwhelmed with emotion, she knew her son had grown up and had come to rescue her out of filial devotion.

Knowing her brother Erlang Shen’s immense power, Lady Third told Chenxiang to plead with his uncle. Chenxiang flew to Erlang Temple and earnestly begged Erlang Shen.

Unexpectedly, Erlang Shen was hard-hearted. Not only did he refuse to release Lady Third, he wielded his three-pointed double-edged blade to strike Chenxiang. Enraged, Chenxiang raised his divine axe and fought back.

The two battled amid clouds and mist, blades and axes clashing, fighting from the heavens to the earth, and from the human world to the Heavenly Palace, until mountains shook, seas overturned, and the sky darkened.

The conflict alarmed the Venus Star Immortal, who sent the Four Immortal Maidens to investigate. Seeing Erlang Shen treat his own nephew so cruelly, they found it heartless and unjust, and secretly aided Chenxiang.

Chenxiang grew braver as the battle went on, and Erlang Shen could no longer withstand him. He fled in defeat, and the Lotus Lantern fell into Chenxiang’s hands.

Chenxiang immediately flew back to Mount Hua, raised the divine axe, and struck with all his strength. With a thunderous crash, the earth shook, the mountain trembled, and Mount Hua split open.

Chenxiang hurried to the Black Cloud Cave and rescued his mother, who had endured sixteen years of suffering. Reunited at last, mother and son embraced tightly, overwhelmed with emotion and tears streaming down their faces.

Later, Erlang Shen admitted his wrongdoing to Lady Third and Chenxiang. Chenxiang was granted an immortal title by the Jade Emperor. From then on, Lady Third, Liu Xiang, and their son Chenxiang were reunited as a family and lived happily together forever.
